Larry G. Martin, D.V.M. is a native of San Diego, growing up in the mountain town of Julian and graduating from Julian High School. From high school Dr. Martin attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Lincoln College, New Zealand studying Animal Science. Dr. Martin then attended veterinary school at U.C. Davis and graduated in 1988. Following graduation Dr. Martin worked in a mixed animal practice in Alpine, California prior to joining LAVA in November of 1989.
Growing up in a rural setting allowed Dr. Martin the opportunity to follow his passion for animals and agriculture. Dr. Martin grew up riding horses through much of the Cuyamaca back country. He raised market and breeding hogs, had a firewood business and small tree farm while in high school. Dr. Martin was very active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), which paved his way to his undergraduate degree and career goal of becoming a veterinarian. FFA allowed Dr. Martin the opportunity to excel in animal husbandry and group leadership skills.
Areas of interest for Dr. Martin include Equine Medicine and Surgery, Ophthalmology and all areas of Preventative Medicine including advanced Equine Dental Procedures. Dr. Martin feels very strongly that prevention is the best medicine. He has found that being proactive rather than reactive is in the best interest of our equine companions. Dr. Martin has been performing Advanced Dental care for well over a decade and has seen how it pays dividends to the equine patient both in longevity and performance.
Dr. Martin is a husband and father of two children. He has interest outside of veterinary medicine that follow his rural upbringing. He is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hunt, hike and work in the woods. He loves to take his Jeep rock crawling and is a member of the San Diego 4 Wheel Club. Other passions are woodworking and furniture making.
This practice has allowed Dr. Martin the privilege to make a life career doing what he loves most. His passions for horses and people merged together in the beautiful backdrop of San Diego County.
