Large Animal Veterinary Associates (LAVA) was established by Dr. Larry Catt in 1987. Dr. Catt provided service as a solo practitioner until Dr. Martin joined the practice in 1989. Since the early 90’s an associate position has been filled at LAVA. Currently, we are thrilled to have Dr. Elston as an integral member of the veterinary staff.
We at LAVA have a very simple Mission Statement. Our mission is to provide quality veterinary care to our patients through progressive veterinary techniques. We strive to provide personal, friendly care with emphasis on communication and compassion to our clients. In simple terms, “ we treat our patients like they are our own and our clients like close friends”.
In our effort to achieve this “Mission” we have focused on being available and approachable to our clients. Our office is staffed by knowledgeable and courteous people dedicated to providing you with the information and help you need with seamless access to the veterinarians in the field. Our after-hour calls are received by an answering service rather than an automated phone system for that personal touch.
As a multi-doctor practice we have the ability to be available when you need us. In addition, each doctor has his or her own areas of interest and expertise bringing a deeper level of quality service in a broader range of veterinary care. In the event we are unable to provide the necessary care for your animal we have strong working relationships with all of the referral hospitals in the county. The working relationships we have developed over the years allows our clients to benefit both from referrals to these facilities with state of the art equipment and also from our consultations on cases with these world renowned clinicians.

Amy Diener is our office manager. While Amy has held this position for the past 8 years, she has been a client of the practice since established in 1987. Amy also worked as a technician for Dr. Catt in the early years of the practice. Amy is a wife and mother of two adult sons. She brings a wealth of qualities to the practice. Amy’s equine partner is “Carlton” which she boards in Lakeside. Amy also blesses the office with her latest canine companion, “Trinity”, a harlequin Great Dane. “Trinity” is known by all who visit the office and is the official mascot of the LAVA office.
Kathie Vanos splits her time between phone reception duties and technician/lab duties. An employee with LAVA for 14 years, Kathie has a life-time of experience working with veterinarians and animals. An avid horse woman, Kathie’s equine companion, “Shodu”, lives with her and her cats, “Rosita” & “Squeeks”, and chickens in Pine Valley. When Kathie is not at the office she most certainly is on the trails of our San Diego county mountains. The number of miles Kathie logs in the saddle is simply mind numbing.
